Freckled is a quarterly visual inspiration magazine based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. It features photographs, traditional art forms, writing, and fashion by artists globally, as well as local Canadian musicians. With the magazine’s emphasis on beauty in the world, we hope to inspire the desire to create art and to appreciate our surroundings.
As of now the magazine is non profit and online only.
Run by Ting Shuen, Shanene Lau, Nick Lan and Cassandra Tavukciyan.
We are delighted to recieve all submissions! Every email we read is extremely flattering, and we love seeing different artists’ work. The best way to submit is to understand the aesthetic behind Freckled, and to see if your work emulates the same themes and mood.
Please include the type of submission in your email’s subject line (ex. Writing Submission)
and link us to your preferred portfolio’s address (flickr, carbonmade or official website, etc).
Landscapes, dreamy depictions of every day lifestyles, and general ideas of beauty are what we love. We pay close attention to the coloration and tones of each photograph, as well. if it’s shot on location, it should be in accordance to the current season of the issue.
Conceptual and fashion photography is not especially featured in Freckled. Concepts are more prominently displayed in writing and traditional artwork, and our fashion section is more about individualistic style - which is why we feature bloggers!
pieces should be under 600 words preferably, and also loosely reflect ideas or imagery related to the current season.
Cheery and upbeat or mellow and dreamy - we basically like good natured sounding tunes with fun and talented band members! If you know of a good Canadian musican/group, we’d love to hear your suggestions!
Link us to your portfolio! We’re open to any medium - installation, illustration, painting, textile, graphic design, etc, etc. It may help to look at past issues of the magazine to see what sorts of styles fit best in Freckled - basically, we love anything dreamy, adventurous, and with a concept. Please have high quality, well lit, color corrected photographs/scans of your work when you submit. Needless to say, presentation is as important as the work itself!
We’re looking for style bloggers with a sharp sense of fashion and unique ideas that make their outfits personal. Outfits should be reflective of the current season, and we will send you a couple interview questions also having to do with your seasonal choices. If you are able to provide new, unpublished photographs (well lit, colored and composed), that would be ideal! Message us with a link to your blog.
